Drywall repair in Malibu: patching a hole in drywall with joint compound at a Malibu home

Local Drywall Repair in Malibu, CA

Doorknob hole, crack over the door or a stained ceiling? It gets patched, textured to match and prepped for paint.

Doorknob punched through the wall. A crack running up from the corner of a window. Little round bumps where nails are backing out. Most drywall repair in Malibu is one of those, and nearly every one can be made to disappear.

The patch itself is simple. Making it invisible is the craft: feathering mud out wide, sanding flat, matching the texture and priming so the paint doesn't flash. Those last steps get our time, because they're what you actually see.

Messier stuff too, like water-damaged ceilings and old plaster. And we'll say so when a wall needs more than a patch.

When Drywall Repair in Malibu Is the Next Step

Doorknob or furniture holes

Fist-sized holes are the most common call. A backer and a new piece fix them for good. Add a door stop afterward.

Cracks at door and window corners

Corners are where walls flex. Cracks there come back unless they're taped, not just filled.

Nail and screw pops

Small round bumps along a stud line. A new screw beside each one, then a fresh coat.

Water stains and soft spots

Once the leak is fixed, wet drywall needs to come out, not just get painted over.

Torn paper from old anchors

Pulled-out shelves and TV mounts leave torn face paper. It needs sealing before mud or it bubbles.

Openings after other repairs

After a plumber or electrician opens a wall, we close it back up and match the finish.

Drywall Repair for Homes and Rentals

Homes

Walls and ceilings in every room: holes, cracks, water damage, old anchor holes and the openings left behind after other repairs. Smooth walls are easy to match, and so are the common textures.

Rentals & small business

Move-outs leave holes from nails, TV brackets and furniture. Between tenants, we patch rentals and small offices, a unit or a few rooms at a time, and can paint the patched walls too.

Our Approach to Drywall Repair

01

Cut back to solid

We square up the damaged area and cut back to firm board, past anything crumbly or water-stained.

02

Back it and patch

Wood backing goes behind bigger holes, then a new piece of drywall gets screwed in. Small holes get a mesh or California patch.

03

Tape and mud in layers

Paper or mesh tape on the seams, setting-type mud for the first coat, then lightweight compound feathered wide over two or three more.

04

Sand, texture, prime

We sand flat under a work light, spray or hand-match the texture and prime so the patch takes paint like the rest of the wall.

The Hard Ones: Ceilings, Water Damage and Plaster

Ceilings are tougher than walls. You're working overhead, light rakes across every seam, and popcorn texture complicates things. Older acoustic ceiling texture can contain asbestos, so we don't sand or scrape it until it's been tested.

Water damage is the other big one. First the moisture meter goes on the board, then anything soft or stained gets cut back to dry drywall and we look at the framing behind it. If there's mold over a large area, that's a remediation job for specialists. The leak gets fixed first, no exceptions.

Some older homes have plaster instead of drywall. Plaster cracks differently and doesn't patch the same way. A bonding agent and setting-type compound make the repair grab the old surface instead of shrinking away from it.

What's Different About Drywall Repair in Malibu

Malibu walls move. The City lists Seismic Design Category D or greater for construction here, and hillside and canyon lots can settle on top of that. That's part of why cracks so often run diagonally off door and window corners. Filling them with spackle doesn't hold, so we open a small V, bed paper tape across it and coat it so it can flex a bit.

Plenty of houses here also have a few decades on them. Malibu's median home was built in 1976, so we run into lath and plaster, layered paint and textures nobody's mixed in years. Matching those takes a little trial on a sample board before we touch your wall.

Can You Patch Drywall Yourself?

For nail holes and small dents, absolutely. Spackle, a putty knife and a sanding sponge will do it. For a hole up to a few inches, a stick-on mesh patch works fine if you feather the mud wider than you think, at least six inches past the patch.

The hard part is the finish, not the patch. Most DIY repairs show because the edges weren't feathered or the texture doesn't match. Spray-can texture is hit or miss. On a smooth wall with light raking across it, you'll see every ridge.

Repairs We Handle and When We Bring In a Partner

California's minor work exemption lets us take jobs where the whole price for labor, materials and everything else stays under $1,000 and no building permit is needed. Most patches, cracks and small ceiling repairs fall inside that.

Hanging new drywall through a whole room, rebuilding walls after a big leak or anything tied into a remodel is a bigger job, and the law doesn't let it be split into smaller bills. We refer those to trusted licensed partners and stay the one you call.

What to Expect

How long does it take?
Mud has to dry between coats, so even small patches usually mean two short visits. Setting-type compound speeds that up. Bigger repairs with texture and paint often take two or three trips.
Will there be a mess?
Sanding makes fine dust. Plastic goes over doorways and vents, drop cloths go down, and we sand with a vacuum attachment where we can. Then we clean up before we leave.
What does it cost?
Cost guides put patching a small hole at $300 to $500 and larger damage that needs a new piece at $500 to $800 or more. Size, ceiling versus wall, texture match and whether we also paint are what move the number.
Do I need a permit?
Not for patching holes and cracks. Replacing large sections after water damage that also involves plumbing or framing can need one, and that work goes to a licensed partner.
Do I need to be home?
For the first visit, yes, so we can agree on texture and finish. For follow-up coats, you can leave a key or a door code.

Drywall Repair FAQ

Will drywall repair in Malibu match my wall texture?

Usually, yes, close enough that you'd have to hunt for it. Orange peel, knockdown and smooth walls are the most common, and we match them with a hopper gun, a sponge or a trowel. Really old or custom textures take some testing (on a scrap piece first, so you can see it before it goes on your wall).

Why does the crack keep coming back?

Because it was filled, not taped. Cracks at doors and windows move with the house, and spackle alone just breaks again. The fix is opening the crack slightly, bedding paper tape over it and feathering mud wide. If a crack keeps growing after that, it may be a framing or foundation question worth a closer look.

Can you repair a water-damaged ceiling?

Yes, once the leak is fixed and the area is dry. After a moisture check, stained or soft drywall gets cut out and new board goes in with matching texture. A ceiling that's sagging or soft over a big area needs more than a patch, and we'll tell you if that's what we find.

Do you paint after patching?

We can. Patches need primer anyway, and painting the whole wall is often the only way to make a repair blend, since spot touch-ups tend to show. Got leftover paint? Great. If not, we can get a match from a small chip of the wall.

What about nail pops?

They're easy to fix but come back if you just mud over them. We drive a drywall screw just above and below the popped nail to pull the board tight, set the nail deeper, then coat and sand. They're pretty common in newer homes as the framing lumber dries out.
