Local Garbage Disposal Installation in Malibu, CA
Disposal humming, leaking from the bottom or just dead? Out comes the old one, in goes a new one, and the sink drains right again.
Disposal hums but won't spin? Leaking out the bottom onto everything under the sink? Those are the two most common reasons people look into garbage disposal installation in Malibu. We pull the old unit, mount a new one on a clean sink flange, hook up the drain and dishwasher line, and run water until we're sure nothing drips.
Not every dead disposal needs replacing, though. A jam or a tripped reset button is a five-minute fix, and we'd rather tell you that over the phone than drive out to sell you a unit. If water is coming out of the housing itself, that's a cracked body. Time for a new one.
And where there wasn't a disposal before? We can put one in, as long as there's already a switched outlet or wiring under the sink for it.
Signs It's Time for a New Disposal
Humming with no spin
The motor's trying but the plates are stuck. Sometimes that's a jam you can free. A jam that keeps coming back means the motor is on its way out.
Water leaking from the bottom
A drip from the body of the unit means the internal seals have failed. There's no fixing that one. It gets replaced.
Leak at the top flange
Water around the sink opening usually means old plumber's putty dried out or the mounting ring loosened. That we can often reseal.
Trips the reset button a lot
A motor that overheats and shuts off over and over is tired. Small horsepower units on busy kitchens wear out first.
Slow drain and bad smell
Food buildup in the grinding chamber or the P-trap backs things up. A clean-out may solve it before a swap does.
Loud grinding or rattling
Something metal fell in, or the flywheel is loose. Pull the power first, then look with a flashlight, never a hand.
Garbage Disposal Installation in Malibu for Homes and Rentals
Homes
Most of our disposal work is a straight swap in a home kitchen, sometimes a second unit in a prep sink or a bar sink. We'll ask how you cook and how many people live there, then suggest a size that fits. No upselling a giant motor for a two-person household.
Rentals & small business
We swap disposals in rental units, vacation homes and small office kitchens. For property managers with several units, the same model in each one makes the next repair faster. Restaurant-grade commercial units aren't something we install.

Our Approach to Garbage Disposal Installation
Kill the power first
We shut off the breaker or unplug the unit and test it before a hand goes near it. Then we put a bucket under the trap.
Pull the old unit
We disconnect the drain and dishwasher hose, twist the unit off its mounting ring and remove the old sink flange if it's worn.
Set flange and mount
Fresh plumber's putty goes under the new flange, then the mounting ring snugs up from below. The unit hangs and locks on.
Hook up and test
We knock out the dishwasher plug if needed, reconnect the drain and P-trap, and run water and the grinder while we check every joint.
The Tricky Installs: Odd Drains, Old Sinks and No Outlet
Some swaps fight back. A new unit can sit taller or shorter than the old one, so the drain outlet no longer lines up with the trap. Then we cut and refit the tailpiece or reset the trap height. Older homes sometimes have a trap arm that comes out of the wall too high, which makes the drain run uphill. That's where slow drains and smells come from.
Old cast iron and fireclay sinks bring their own fun. Thick sinks may need an extended flange, and a chipped drain opening won't seal no matter how much putty you use. We'll tell you if the sink itself is the problem.
No power under the sink? Adding a new outlet or a new circuit is electrical work that usually needs a permit. That goes to a licensed electrician partner, and then we come back to hang the disposal.
Dead, leaking or humming disposal swapped out, drain lines reset and tested under the sink. Send a photo and the address, and you'll get a straight answer.
(333) 333‑3333What to Know About Disposals in a Malibu Kitchen
Plenty of local kitchens are original or close to it. The median home in Malibu was built in 1976, per Census data, so under-sink plumbing is often older than the disposal hanging from it. So the trap, the tailpiece and the wall connection get a look before we promise a clean swap.
If your house is on a septic system, tell us up front. Ground food adds solids to the tank. Some makers sell septic-rated models with an enzyme cartridge, and some septic owners skip a disposal entirely. We'll give you the trade-offs and let you decide.
Can You Swap a Disposal Yourself?
If you're handy, yes. A plug-in unit replacing the same brand can be a Saturday-morning job. The big mistakes are forgetting to knock out the dishwasher plug inside the inlet (the dishwasher will back up into the sink), and over-tightening plastic drain parts until they crack.
Before you call anyone for a dead unit, check two things. Push the red reset button on the bottom. Then, with the power off, put an Allen wrench in the hex socket on the bottom center and work it back and forth to free a jam. That fixes a lot of them.
Disposal Jobs We Handle and When We Bring In a Partner
We do swaps, new installs on existing power, drain refits, dishwasher hookups to the disposal, and flange reseals. Under California B&P Code §7048, work without a contractor's license has to total less than $1,000 and can't include anything that needs a building permit. New circuits, new outlets and bigger re-plumbing go to trusted licensed partners. We line up the referral and come back for our part.
What to Expect
- How long does it take?
- A straight swap usually takes an hour or two. Add time if the drain needs to be refit, the sink flange is stuck or we're switching from a hardwired unit to a plug-in cord kit.
- Will there be a mess?
- A little water under the sink, mostly. The cabinet gets emptied onto a towel, a bucket goes under the trap, and everything gets wiped down before your stuff goes back.
- What does it cost?
- Public cost guides put garbage disposal installation at $200 to $625 for most homeowners, averaging about $550, per HomeAdvisor. The unit's horsepower, drain changes, and whether there's already an outlet are what move the number.
- Do I need a permit?
- A like-for-like swap on existing power and plumbing generally doesn't. New wiring or a new outlet under the sink usually does, and that part goes to a licensed electrician partner.
- Do I need to be home?
- Not for the whole job. Someone needs to let us in and clear the cabinet, or we can clear it ourselves. We'll text you when it's running.
Garbage Disposal Installation FAQ
What does garbage disposal installation in Malibu involve?
It's pulling the old unit, setting a fresh sink flange, hanging the new disposal and reconnecting the drain and dishwasher hose. Then we test every joint under running water. On most kitchens that's an hour or two. Drain lines that don't match up with the new unit get refit while we're there.
What size disposal should I get?
For most households, a 1/2 horsepower unit is plenty. A 1/3 HP is fine for light use or a bar sink. Bigger families who cook a lot do better with 3/4 HP, which grinds faster and jams less. Stainless grinding parts last longer than galvanized ones. We'd skip the bargain-bin models.
Why does my dishwasher drain into the sink?
Usually it's the knockout plug. New disposals ship with a plug inside the dishwasher inlet, and if nobody punched it out, dishwasher water has nowhere to go. A kinked or sagging drain hose can do it too. The hose should loop up high under the counter or run to an air gap so dirty water can't flow back.
Can you install a disposal where there was never one?
Yes, if there's already power under the sink. That means a switched outlet or wiring set up for it. No outlet? A licensed electrician partner adds it first. Then we mount the unit, rework the drain to fit and connect the dishwasher hose.
What shouldn't go down a disposal?
Grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice and stringy stuff like celery or corn husks. Grease hardens in the pipes. Grounds and shells settle into sludge. Starches swell and stick. Run cold water while it grinds and for a few seconds after, and the unit will last longer.
